The Macbeth Characterization Essay

Although Macbeth appeared loyal and noble early in the play his characteristics earned him power but his subservience to his wife kindles his darker nature that lurked beneath.

Macbeth appeared loyal and noble early in the play. He was all about doing right for his king and being the best thane. Macbeth quotes “the service and the loyalty i owe” this quote demonstrates how he was a man of good deeds who wanted to serve his king. He respected the king and every decision he made he was risking his life fighting wars to protect his king and the land they held. Macbeth quotes “ for brave Macbeth… Which smoked with bloody execution” this quote is what his mind was telling him after they just got done battling. He clearly appeared loyal and noble early in the play with not only his words but also his actions.

This brave character had many characteristics that made him into the powerful man he was. Macbeth's characteristics earned him power through the loyalness he had toward the king and the bravery he held for keeping the people safe by going protecting them by fighting for them. He quotes “that which hath made them drunk hath made me bold” by this he in a way means what effects other people only makes him stronger. Macbeth was a bold thane who was tough and strong for just about any situation that came his way. Macbeth quotes “to kill Duncan” this quote shows power because to gain power Macbeth had to kill the king (Duncan) to become king and killing the king earned him power.

Macbeth let his subservience to his wife kindle his darker nature that lurked beneath. Lady Macbeth was thirsty for wealth and power but for that she needed Macbeth to kill the king so Macbeth could take his spot. Lady Macbeth eventually encouraged Macbeth to kill the king and her dreams of being wealthy and powerful came true. After killing the king Macbeth keeps thinking about how wrong it was he quotes “ I am in blood stepp'd in so far that, should i wade no more returning were as tedious as go O’er” he keeps thinking about the terrible thing he has done and how there is no way to undo it and he has to live with the consequences. Macbeth’s treacherous dreams are getting to him and driving him insane he quotes “sleep no more! Macbeth does murder sleep” the flashbacks and dreams of the actions he has committed are keeping him on edge, overly paranoid and sleepless at night for he has murdered the king and it is a dirty secret only him and his wife know about and getting away with it so easily is getting to his head and is killing him inside.

Macbeth was a brave and trustworthy thane who did right for his king. He was loyal until he started having second thoughts about what the three witches told him. He let his thoughts of power control him and turns his faithfulness into evil. With the agitation of his wife nagging at him about the things he needs to do to become king, he chooses a bad path and decides to kill the king. When his nightmares about his actions get the best of him it drives him wildly insane. What would you do if you had the opportunity to become a rich well respected king?.

  1. The biggest improvements I see is to first lengthen your introduction to the length of a small paragraph because it only is one sentence. The second big improvement is to vary your language. An example would be your use of kill because you use this one word multiple times close together. Essays look a lot better with variation in words and not repeating the same word. Lastly you should build into your quotes not just say it is a quote. Quote is not normally a good word for this type of essay.

  2. Make sure you put in the act, scene, and line number in with each quote. Also put the date in the top left and make sure everything is double spaced. Like the other person said I would used a variety of words also elaborate a little more on why each quote supports your thesis.
