Macbeth Essay
Shakespeare’s tragic play Macbeth shows the transformation of certain characters and shows how sometimes the person you trust the most can turn on you in a matter of time. Shakespeare does a great job with the play in showing trust and the fear of guilt. One character Macbeth stood out the most throughout the whole story. Although Macbeth appeared triumphant, he lacked confidence causing him to become susceptible to the promise of power revealing his depraved nature.
In the beginning of the play you see Macbeth has an innocent human being and being known as brave. Right away when Macbeth was first introduced he was called brave. “For brave Macbeth-well he deserves that name.(1;2 line 16)” This was said by the captain saying that Macbeth is brave and that his bravery gives him the name Macbeth. In another passage Macbeth’s great friend Banquo speaks greatly of Macbeth. ““My noble partner, you greet me with present grace and great prediction of noble having and of royal hope.(1;3 Lines 54-56)” Banquo said this after Macbeth was informed that he would soon be Thane Of Cawdor by the three witches. Banquo wants to make sure that Macbeth knows that he is worthy of being Thane and not to worry about anything. In the discussion from Macbeth and Lady Macbeth about killing King Duncan Macbeth tells his wife that he will have no part in this. This is proven in 1;7 Lines 31-35 “We will proceed no further in this business:He hath honored me of late, and I have bought Golden opinions from all sorts of people, Which would be worn now in their newest gloss, Not cast aside so soon.”
Although Macbeth appeared strong he lacked confidence and he soon became vulnerable by others. “I am settled, and bend up each corporal agent to this terrible feat. Away, and mock the time with fairest show: False face must hide what the false heart don’t(1;6 Lines 79-82).” In this passage Macbeth is saying that his face of fear and shock must hide what his heart his feeling which is guilt and he lacks the confidence in him to be able to do that. “Even till destruction sicken, answer me to what i ask you.(4;1 Lines 60-61).” Macbeth is talking to the 3 witches about his future and if he will stay king and to see if anyone will come near him and take over like Banquo or his sons. Macbeth doesn’t trust himself to stay king because he feels he cannot keep Duncan's death a secret.
After Macbeth had killed Duncan you see a part of him that was never seen before. His depraved nature started to emerge. You first start to see this start to occur in the passage ““Then live, Macduff: what need I fear of thee? But yet I’ll make assurance double sure, And take a bond of fate. Thou shalt not live; that I may tell pale-hearted fear it lies, and sleep in spite of thunder(4;1 Lines 82-86).” This is showing Macbeth wanting to kill Macduff after the witches told him he would try and get in the way. He says sleep in spite of thunder because he will sleep knowing he did a bad deed but it will soon go away like thunder does. Another huge passage when his Macbeth’s wife dies and he shows no sympathy to it whatsoever. “Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow,Creeps in this petty pace from day to day,To the last syllable of recorded time;And all our yesterdays have lighted fools. The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player, That struts and frets his hour upon the stage, And then is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing(5.5 Lines 19-28).”
Throughout the whole play you see the change throughout one major character. Although Macbeth’s wife changed also before she died Macbeth never was able to get over him killing King Duncan and that caught up to him quickly. Once it caught up to him, he was unable to forget about the deed that he had done and became cold hearted. He was unable to have feelings toward the end and even with his last breath he knew that he had made a mistake and that death was the one way out.
